Bank One used to be among the largest banks in America with stocks traded in New York Stock Exchange. The holding corporation of Bank One was headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. It has its origin from First Bancgroup of Ohio.

Banc One Corporation was the renamed company of First Bancgroup which consisted of City National Bank and other banks in Ohio. The holding company was based in Columbus, Ohio. The merger of Banc One Corporation with First Chicago NBD Corporation resulted to the formation of Bank One Corporation. The headquarters was then transferred to Chicago during the merger.

Bank One was the largest issuer of Visa card in the world through its subsidiary First USA. The latter was renamed in 2002 to Bank One Card Services.

Bank One had been through a lot of acquisitions and mergers before it formed with JPMorgan Chase. Most of the acquired financial companies were founded in the 19th century.

Over the years, Bank One has been known through the use of advanced technology in delivering its services to its markets and customers.
