And it all started in year 1852, when the Pittsburgh Trust and Savings Company was founded. It soon shared a number of feats and firsts in the banking world including the record of being of the first bank to sign up for charter as per the 1863 National Bank Act. Eighty three years after its inception, the Pittsburgh Trust and Savings Company merged with the Peoples-Pittsburgh Trust Company and become Peoples First National Bank and Trust Company. 10 years later, another merger would change its name to Pittsburgh National Bank.

In these same years, another long established company in Pittsburgh the Provident Tradesmens Bank and Trust Company joined with Provident Trust Company in Philadelphia to form the Provident National Bank. The two great institutions of Pittsburgh came together in the 1980s, after Pennsylvania laws allowed companies to operate statewide. Again, they made history these two companies agree to merge making it the biggest bank merger in US banking history during their time. In 1982, PNC Financial Corporation was created.

As competition was steep, many banks followed suit and many mergers were created. PNC didn’t want to get behind and took a leap when it merged with Kentucky-based Citizens Fidelity Corporation. Then PNC took ownership major banking institutions in Delaware and Cincinnati. Before the start of the 90s, PNC Bank branch locations would have already increased.

The swell of PNC Bank locations was not only the focus of the company. It also boosted its technology edge by upgrading the company’s computer platforms into a single system. This enabled the company and its branches to offer not only similar products and services but standardized way of dealing with their clients.
