In the year 1811, the sun rose in the lands of Virginia when a bank opened in Alexandria which later became the company’s ancestor. On the 16th of February, The Farmers Bank of Alexandria was given a Charter by the US Congress. 80 years later, in Atlanta, an investment and trust banking institution rose by the name of Commercial Travelers Savings Bank. In 1893, it re-branded and renamed to the Trust Company of Georgia.
In 1919, the Trust Company of Georgia collaborated with the Coca-Cola Company in underwriting services. This was a triggering point to a long standing stocks trade relationship between the two companies. Today, Sun Trust holds 48.3 million of Coca-Cola Company’s shares.
In 1927, the Third National Bank in Nashville, Tennessee was charted and would become a merger with Sun Trust 59 years later. In 1934, the birth of a would-be merger came by the name of The First National Bank of Orlando in Florida. A few years later, the First National Bank in Orlando was changed to SunBanks Inc. 1985 was the year when SunBanks Inc merged with the Trust Company of Georgia and formed the SunTrust Banks, Inc. The two however retained its names on each of their market.
A year later, SunTrust Banks, Inc. purchased Third National Corporation. A decade later, all three entities adapted the brand Sun Trust in all its operations and markets. Now a big player in the banking industry in Florida, Tennessee and Georgia, the Sun Trust Bank launched the company’s online portal in 1996. Over the next 10 years, it would already have 6 acquisitions and other key developments.
Between 1996 and 2006, the companies that joined with Sun Trust were the Equitable Securities Company, Crestar Financial Corporation, Robinson Humphrey Company, Asset Management Advisors, Huntington Bancshares of Florida and Lighthouse Financial Services.
